Tommy Streeter and Marcus Forston have signed with agent Drew Rosenhaus and declared for the NFL Draft. They came together in the 2008 recruiting class that was ranked number one in the country.

Both players have been together since there middle school years as both of them attended Miami Northwestern high school.

Streeter, 22, played in all 12 games this season and caught 46 passes for 811 yards and eight touchdowns.

Forston, considered one of the best defensive tackles in the country coming out of high school had injury problems throughout his college career. I’m not sure why he is declaring but I would Make a bet that he will represent the U with Pride.

There has been a huge up-roar from displeased Hurricanes fans recently about the Dolphins honoring the 2008 Florida Gators at halftime of there week 7 game vs the Broncos. I know a lot of you are thinking the obvious, “Why aren’t they honoring the 2001 Hurricanes championship team?” For those who don’t know, the Dolphins approached University officials about honoring them but the University declined and chose to do so on their own terms.

On Thursday night when Miami hosts Virginia on ESPN the University of Miami will honor the team that is widely considered the best college football team of all-time. Well-played Miami. If you think about the situation, it makes much more sense. They will be honored on a Thursday night because unlike UF, Miami produces NFL superstars who have business to attend to on Sunday’s.

NFL Pro Bowlers such as Andre Johnson, Ed Reed, Jeremy Shockey, Jon Vilma, Bryant McKinnie and other current NFL players have been invited to join the celebration.

The 2001 national championship UM baseball team will also be honored that night as well. Don’t forget, the game is on Thursday night on ESPN at 8pm. Tickets are still available, you don’t want to miss out on this memorable night in Hurricanes history.

7 games into the season and we are finally getting a look at the make up of this team. Al Golden has transformed a team that was lacking in heart and character to a team that doesn’t quit and plays hard for 4 quarters. Jacory Harris is finally coming into his own in his senior season and the program looks like they are on the rise.

If Miami can survive what ever sanctions are placed on them than they have the chance to do some big things in the next few years. Most of this years team will be back in 2012 and if Lamar Miller opts to stay another season in college instead of leaving for the NFL than next year’s canes can be really special.

If Miami can finish off the 2011 season with an 8 game winning streak than the future looks very bright. In the past, whenever Miami gets to this point in a season where they are about to turn a corner they lose to a team like Virginia or they self destruct. I believe that under the watch of Al Golden this won’t happen anymore. Make no mistake about it, the remaining games on the schedule will not be easy and should all be dog fights. Lets take the ride one game at a time and enjoy the “process.” Lets not make the same mistake we’ve made in the past and start predicting the wins and losses on the schedule.

The canes are 3-3 at the halfway point with wins impressive wins vs Ohio State, and North Carolina and disappointing losses to Virginia Tech, and Kansas State. The offense has improved leaps and bounds over last year, but the defense has been a neverending struggle. Here is my first half report card for each individual unit.

Quarterbacks

Jacory Harris has played like an All American at times this year and has carried the teams in every game he has started this season at Miami. One could only imagine how Harris would perform if he had 4 full years under Jedd Fish’s offense.

grade: A

Runningbacks

Lamar Miller has played like a 1st round draft choice all season the guy is dynamic and one of the best players in all of college football. The games he played against Virginia Tech and Ohio State were jaw dropping. Mike James has been a bit of a disappointment, but the play of Eduardo Clements has opened up some eyes. There is no overlooking the impact of Miller on this team.

grade: A+

Receivers

Allen Hurns, Tommy Streeter, and Travis Benjamin look like a real receiving core. The number of drops have gone down considerably from last year. This unit has come up big when the chips have been on the table. The only question mark has been the disappearance of Laron Byrd.

grade B+

Offensive line

The offensive line has been solid but not as dominant as expected. The drive that comes to mind when discussing this unit was the final drive against Kansas State when they had 4 chances inside the 2 yard line to punch it in and they were not able to do it. On the bright side 5 straight 100 yard games from Lamar Miller and only 4 sacks on the year against Jacory Harris are numbers to be proud about. The line has not been elite but they’ve done some really good things.

grade B

Tightends

Clive Walford, Asante Cleveland, and Chase Ford have yet to get into the endzone this season which is a bit disappointing. Nobody has really seperated themself from the group yet. I don’t think there is an opposing defensive coordinator that’s had to gameplan for any of these guys. Clive has probably stood out the most out of the three but were still waiting for a breakout game from someone

grade D

Defensive line

Other than the strong play of freshman sensation Anthony Chickillo there hasn’t been much else to write home about. Injuries and suspensions have really hurt this unit as Vernon, Forston, Green, Porter, Robinson, and now Regis have all missed games. This position was hit hard and the lack of depth shows with the non existent pass rush.

grade D

Linebackers

Sean Spence has been Sean Spence, but the rest of the linebacking core has been invisible. When senior Ramon Buchanan went down against Bethune Cookman things really starting going downhill and like the d-line the lack of depth really started to show. Underclassmen Jimmy Gaines and Denzel Perryman are showing promise and the strong 2012 recruiting class leaves reason for optimism here for the future.

grade C

Secondary.

A once proud unit at the University of Miami has now become the team’s biggest weakness. Giving up big plays of 20+ yards have become a thing of normal for this unit. There hasn’t been an interception since the Ohio State game and the tackling at times has been ugly to say the least. What really disappoints me is the play from Vaughn Telemaque and Ray Ray Armstrong, neither one of these guys have been able to get on track.

grade F

Special Teams

The special teams unit is probably the one unit other than quarterback spot that has shown the most improvement since 2010. The coverage teams have been dominant creating turnovers and making big hits all over the place. You can really see the change in the philosophy on this unit

grade A+

Miami’s valiant comeback effort fell short last Saturday in Blacksburg as the hurricanes travel to Chapel Hill this weekend. We are witnessing a star in the making in Lamar Miller as he continues to rack up 100 + yards in every game. Jacory Harris is finally starting to look the quarterback we were all expecting to see since 2008. Here is my take on what I learned about the U after their 38-35 loss to Virginia Tech.

1. This could be the worst defense Miami has fielded since the probation years. The canes have absolutley no pass rush and they have to play their cornerbacks 10 yards off the ball on every down. Whoever says Ray Ray Armstrong and Marcus Forston are NFL ready needs a reality check. The canes need defensive tackle and secondary help more than any other position this recruiting season. Tracy Howard out of Miramar High would start today for this defense at cornerback.

2. We finally saw someone step up at the tightend position and it was Clive Walford. We can now officialy stop the tightend carousel and keep Chase Ford and Asante Cleveland on the bench so Walford can get the playing time he needs.

3. Where is Laron Byrd? I have not seen him make a catch since the opener against Maryland. At this point I am almost starting to think that we should redshirt him and use him for depth next year.

4. Back to the secondary, the 4 guys I would like to see on the field are Telemaque, Nicolas, Armstrong, and Finnie. I have closed the books on Lee Chambers, Michael Williams, and Brandon McGee. Those guys are burnt toast. Give Keon Payne, Dallas Crawford, Kacy Rodgers, and Highsmith a chance.

5. If we do not find a way to plug the middle of our defensive line we are going to get mauled by Georgia Tech and Carolina. They could run for 300 + yards on this soft interior. I have no idea how Miami can fix this as they are down to true freshman and transfers on the depth chart on the line now.

First.. Is everyone forgetting we are maybe 2 or 3 plays away from being 4-0? I think this simple fact has been lost somewhere along the way. That compounded with the early suspensions could easily go hand in hand… But I dont want to come off like I am making excuses. But to seriously think we are simply mediocre and truly a 2-2 team all things should be considered… right?

I mean isn’t it safe to say players like Travis Benjamin and Sean Spence would of helped us against Maryland on September 5th? Same goes for Ray Ray Armstrong for both of our loses.. But with that said we can look forward.

Against the Hokies this Saturday we will get a couple more players back from suspensions in Dyron Dye and Ray Ray Armstrong. Look to see an instant impact from Armstrong, who is projected as one of the nations top safeties coming into the season. That combined with a Hokie offense that has been struggling recently work in the Canes favor.

The 2-2 hurricanes go into Blacksburg this weekend to face a ranked Virginia Tech team that just lost an embarassing game at home this past Saturday. The loser of this game will fall to (0-2) in the ACC so there is a lot at stake. In order for Miami to have a chance this weekend they will have to win the turnover battle, stop the run, and commit less penalties. Here is a position breakdown for the game.

Quarterback

Jacory Harris had one of his worst games as a hurricane in the rain storm game 2 years ago. Logan Thomas had big expectations coming into the year but layed an egg against Clemson last week. The quarterback that doesn’t give the ball away wins.

advantage: tie

Runningback

Lamar Miller and David Wilson will both be playing on Sunday’s very soon. Last year Miller had a monster game against the Hokies in a loss at Sun Life Stadium. Look for both defenses to get a heavy dose of each of these star tailbacks Saturday.

advantage: tie

Wide Receiver

Virginia Tech and Miami are both deep at receiver. Tommy Streeter is playing like an all conference receiver as of late. Marcus Davis, Danny Coale, and Jarrett Boykin are top receivers as well. Allen Hurns and Travis Benjamin need to have big games on Saturday for Miami to pull off the win.

advantage: tie

Offensive line

Miami’s line have not lived up to their billing in the first four games. Pass protection has been ok, but the fact that the canes have been passing on 3rd and 1 and 4th and 1 is sign that Al Golden has no confidence in his o-line. Tech looked good in their first few games, but Clemson was able to dominate the Hoakie line most of the day.

advantage: VTech

Defensive line

the Hoakies will be without one of their key players on the d-line Antoine Hopkins. Still, they should be able to outperform a Miami defensive line that is 105th in the nation at stopping the run. Marcus Forston has been a huge disappointment this season and the canes have had no pass rush to speak of.

advantage: VTech

Linebacker

The canes will be without Ramon Buchanan, and they will have the job of stopping one of the best runningbacks in all of college football. Jordan Futch gets the start and the Hoakies will look to exploit the senior linebacker in any way possible. Bruce Taylor is the top player to watch in the Hoakie linebacking core.

advantage: VTech

Secondary

Jayron Hosley is an all american candidate and the canes will get back their top safety Ray Ray Armstrong after having served a 4 game suspension. Michael Williams, Lee Chambers, and Brandon McGee will have to step up and make tackles or the score could get out of hand.

advantage: VTech

Special Teams

Beamer Ball has been a staple of the Hoakies team over the past 10 years. Surprisingly the hurricanes have looked very impressive on special teams as well. Al Golden has done a tremendous job of improving this unit for Miami.

advantage: VTech

Coaching

Al Golden looks like the right man for the job at Miami, but Frank Beamer and Bud Foster have been playing in this series over the past 10 years. VTech has the experience advantage here and its clearly evident.

advantage: VTech

Prediction

Miami is trying to turn the ship but they are facing the wrong opponent here at the wrong time. The Hoakies will be angry after suffering a big loss to Clemson last week and they will look to run the ball at Miami to get out some of that frustration. The return of Ray Ray armstrong will be a help to Miami but their tackling woes continue on the road vs a hostile crowd.

Prediction VTech 27-16

Miami started off very sluggish this past Saturday but were able to walk away with a 45-14 victory. The defense struggled and the gay was still very much for grabs midway through the 3rd quarter. Lamar Miller topped 100 yards for the fourth straight game and now the canes prepare for their big matchup this weekend in Blacksburg against Virginia Tech. Here are my extra points from the game.

1. The run defense looked very poor and they did not have an answer for the Bethune Cookman run game all day. If Miami doesn’t change up their scheme or find a way to stop Virginia Tech’s leading rusher David Wilson than they will get blown out on Saturday.

2. Tommy Streeter is finally coming into his own at receiver for the hurricanes. Streeter had 2 touchdown receptions on the day and continues to improve every week. Streeter and Allen Hurns look to be the future of this program going forward.

3. Eduardo Clements looked very good in spot time and should continue to get carries for the rest of the season. Clements displayed soft hands and the ability to get into the next level of the defense much like Lamar Miller. I would like to see Eduardo have a more significant role in the offense.

4. Michael Williams and Lee Chambers are a liability on defense. With the return of Ray Ray Armstrong next week Jo Jo Nicolas may finally get back to playing cornerback where he began in camp. The secondary I would like to see from this point on is Thomas Finnie and Nicolas at corner and Telemaque and Armstrong at safety.

5. In order for Miami to make the game competitive this Saturday the three major changes that need to take place are 1) better tackling 2) lesser penalties 3) win the turnover battle. If they don’t win those 3 matchups this game could get out of hand.

The Hurricanes wrapped up a 3-game home stand on Saturday when the defeated the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats 45-14. Another slow start from the Canes helps BCU to an early 7-0 lead going into the second quarter. The defense came out flat again but really got it together later on in the game. Lamar Miller lead the way with yet another 100-yard game rushing for 102 yards off 14 carries and 2 Tds including one that went for 43 yards.

Jacory Harris had a great game. He went 12/17 with 175 yards and 2 TDs. In the second quarter Jacory Harris connected with former high school teammate Tommy Streeter for a 56-yard touchdown. The two also connected for a 27 yard TD in the 4th quarter. Eduardo Clements scored once on a 1-yard run. Travis Benjamin also had a solid day; he had 6 receptions for 66 yards and was also very effective in the return game.

The Defense again proves to be a spot of concern as they let BCU rack up 422 yards of total offense. The Wildcats won the time of possession battle by having the ball for 38:59 while the Canes had the ball for 21:01. Late in the 4th quarter Kelvin Cain returned an interception 59 yards for a TD.

The Canes are set to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies next Saturday in Blacksburg at 3:30 on ABC. The Hokies are coming off a loss at home to the Clemson Tigers.
